We can take a look, listen to your concerns, and recommend the best course of action.
  • Tree Removals - (Extra Large Are Our Specialty!)  We have years of experience with the task of removing a tree entirely, no matter what the size. Our high climbers are the best, and know the way to bring a tree down safely. They climb high and work their way down, using a combination of pulleys, ropes, and teamwork to remove large chunks of wood. When space permits, we may fell the tree or use specialized removal equipment. Environmental stewardship is important to us: we can leave the wood for use as fuel in the winter months, or remove everything to a recycling facility in the local area.

  • Fine Pruning - Fruit Trees, Roses & More - There are many different reasons to prune trees and bushes, but only one right way to do it. While it is easy to spot the difference between amateur and professional pruning from the ground.  Unprofessional pruning can have a devastating effect on the viability of a tree. When we approach your trees for pruning we keep both aesthetics and tree health in mind. Whether we are pruning to remove diseased limbs, providing clearance, or thinning a canopy, our training and experience help us make the right choices for your trees.

  • Clearance pruning - (Crown Raising and/or directional pruning) - Pruning of lower limbs and canopy of trees/plants that are growing over the sidewalk and/or the roadway space. Also, directional pruning of limbs and canopy that are growing into structures (building, street lights, walls, etc.) that must be pruned to direct growth away or at an angle away from the structure by cutting back to lateral branch that is growing away from structure.

  • Restoration Pruning - Restoration is pruning for trees previously "hat racked", damaged from storms or having other damages that have broken branches or been a cause for sprouting growth on limbs. Pruning should reduce number of sprouts on stub branches, remove stubs of branches where natural growth branches will then dominate and fill canopy area and thin the limbs throughout canopy. Main concerns are to reduce number of multiple leaders along branches and stubbed branch ends and clean cut any broken limbs or stubs to laterals or parent limbs. Work should result in a better balanced canopy and future growth of remaining limbs that will fill in and become a more natural growth pattern of tree species. Pruning may need to be done in phases.

  • Crown Thinning - Removal and pruning of branches throughout total tree canopy to allow greater light penetration through canopy and reduce amount of branching in canopy. No reduction of canopy size is desired as a result of this work. Branches removed should be secondary limbs and should be chosen to allow limbs remaining to be singularly dominant in space they are left.

  • Limb/Leader Reduction pruning - Pruning of limbs which are outside the average canopy size, or natural form, of the tree and to subordinate competing co- dominate leaders. All reduction pruning must be done to secondary limbs that will form new canopy edges and become primary leaders for limbs that were reduced. Any branches shall be included. Limb size shall be reduced by removing no more than 30% of foliage at any given time for the limbs in this category.

  • Stump Grinding -  Our machine fits through a standard back yard gates, 36" min. access needed through any gates. Our stump grinder can handle the largest, and the most stubborn stumps, transforming unsightly and unusable space into lawn or garden space. We strive to be lawn friendly, with grinding down to a depth of four to eighteen inches. We begin by trimming the stump with a chainsaw as close to the ground as possible. We then use our professional stump grinding machine to shave the stump, little by little, until the required depth and area are met, based on the customers wishes. This required area is determined by what is to be done with the space prior to the stump being removed. A larger depth may be required if another tree is to be planted in the space. We are happy to provide a complete tree removal package that includes backfilling with topsoil and reseeding of the area. Pre-existing stump grinding available.

  • Fertilization - (Local & Organic Only) We like the products from this local farm.... http://www.willametteorganics.com/brewmaster.html

  • Crane & Climber Assisted Removals for Tricky Situations Cranes are becoming more common to use for tree removals, particularly with very large, severely damaged, hazardous or unstable trees. Sometimes it’s the only option for removing larger or hazardous trees. Unlike the more typical ways of removing a tree (i.e. climber with ropes), cranes can lift and lower the heaviest pieces of the tree, sometimes weighing between 500 lbs. to 6,000 lbs., safely to the ground with little or no impact to your home, lawn and landscaping or nearby structures. Heavy duty cables and straps are used to balance and maneuver the large sections of tree, where they are cut up into smaller, more manageable pieces that the grounds crew or grapple truck can handle. This is a more costly service, but worth the cost when extensive damage, or increased risk is present. With the use of our crane experts, the arborist at NW Tree Work in Portland, OR can safely and quickly remove any large, damaged, hazardous, or unstable trees from your property. We can also help with urban logging if you want to harvest large trees that are close to a structure intact.

NW Tree Work offers prompt emergency tree services. As a full service General Contractor we will also secure the roof with a tarp. Tree emergencies can happen in any season. Heavy rains and gale force winds can cause severe damage to trees in full leaf through the growing season. Tree damage from storms happens most frequently to trees that are dead, damaged or just could not withstand the conditions they went through. If a tree or large limb falls on your property, fence, or house, our tree experts will remove the tree in the safest way possible, working to prevent further damage in the process. If a fallen tree or limb is too large, hazardous, or inaccessible, we may bring in a crane to remove it from your property in a safe and efficient manner.  Our tree specialists have the equipment and expertise to properly evaluate tree emergencies and develop a safe and effective plan of removal. If you would like to avoid some of the damage from storms, we suggest that you consider regular trimming and maintenance of your trees.  Emergency services in the following counties:  Multnomah, Washington, Clackamas, Columbia, and Clark counties.  If you are in need of emergency tree service due to a storm or other conditions, please call us immediately at 503-995-0540.
